![]() One of the results of working like this was that a lot of music, including some of my favorite things, remained unreleased. On some of my other records the reasons I had for choosing one song over another, in hindsight, feel a good deal less significant. In certain instances, as on Darkness on the Edge of Town, Nebraska, and The Ghost of Tom Joad, these choices crystallized the album I was making. As a result, my albums became a series of choices - what to include, what to leave out? I based my decisions on my creative point of view at the moment - the subject I was trying to focus on, something musical or emotional I was trying to express. What we were doing in there was making a lot of music, a lot more music than I could use at any one time. In the liner notes of his Tracks box set, Bruce Springsteen introduces the box set as follows:ĭuring long intervals between my record releases, as I was spending more and more time in the studio, when I met a fan out on the street I was often asked, "What are you guys doing in there?" I regularly pondered that question myself. Oh oh, I wanna be with you, I wanna be with you When I see you on the street I fall on my face I just can't understand it, you're not pretty at allīut I come when you whisper, I run when you call ![]() I don't care what they say, go ahead and let 'em all talk 'Cause all I wanna do is be seen with you I got thrown out of my house, I got such a bad reputation 'Cause instead of pumping gas I'd dream of you (I wanna be with you), I wanna be with you I can't sleep at night, I got one thing on my mind Well that's just fine, that's alright with me Through a hard rock song, Hardy impersonates the fascinations and the risks of one of the most significant vices of our days. Now let the frozen cities crumble, crumble and fall Still, if you don’t keep it under control, it can create even more significant issues and prevent you from living peacefully in this world. Therefore, the lyrics inside Jack have a double meaning: alcohol can make you feel great for a moment and give you the illusion that you can fix all problems. Say you’re broken and you’re soulless and it’s all my faultĪll I did was make you happy so to hell with them And alcohol has no solution for this: it can just propose to get lost once again, trying to forget how the world sees us.Īll the people in your circle man they’re pissing me off Society can mark you as “broken,” emarginating you. That’s what the chorus makes clear:īut the second verse tells a different story: how people see you if you drink too much. Alcohol (Jack) knows it and offers a compromise: feel free to not drink for a while when you don’t like the idea, but keep me close, as I can give you relief when you need it. If dad had a preference for “Jack,” mom has a totally different opinion and considers it evil. She’ll be walking out with you by the end of the night so You wanna say what’s up but can’t work up the courage toīut if you stick with me buddy you can bet your life I see that blonde hair over there looking at you From this point of view, alcohol is a sweet temptation because of all the things it can make possible: having fun, interacting with interesting people… Have you ever wanted to feel like supermanĭrinking something at a bar can also give you the right attitude to approach the girl you like. ![]() I’ll put the party in your life boy you know I can I’s a friend of your dad’s when he had no one else The introduction is fascinating: alcohol describes itself as something that can bring a party to your life and make you feel like a superhero. The song starts with the whiskey introducing himself to the protagonist as “a friend of dad when he had no one else,” implying that his dad could have had some problems with alcohol. The song describes how drinking alcohol can introduce some fun and courage in our personality but can also have adverse effects if we don’t keep it under control. In the standard interpretation of the lyrics, “Jack” refers to Jack Daniels’ whiskey. Jack is a song about the effects of alcohol in life. ![]()
